What is a lyre harp?

The lyre is a string instrument known for its use in Greek classical antiquity and later periods. The lyre is similar in appearance to a small harp but with distinct differences. The fundamental difference between a lyre and a harp is that in a harp, the strings enter directly into the hollow body of the instrument, whereas, on a lyre, the strings pass over a bridge, which transmits the vibrations of the strings to the body of the instrument – just as on a modern guitar.

In addition, most traditional harps use nylon strings, whereas lyre usually uses steel strings. In terms of timbre, the lyre still has a harp's ethereal and long-lasting tone, but it sounds more ancient with a deeper Medieval tone. The sound of steel strings adds a mysterious and unique beauty to this instrument.
